Sports First Aid Statistics

MAGNITUDE OF SPORTS INJURIES IN THE UNITED STATES
A large number of sports and exercise participants suffer injuries each year. Of the 35-40 million annual injury-related emergency room visits, approximately 10% are sports related. An estimate showed that less serious sports injuries (Those not requiring ER treatment) — were five times as numerous.

Baby Boomers (people aged 35-54) continue to be the main driving force in sports/exercise participation and are generating higher rates of sports injury. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, sports-related ER injuries in this group increased by 33% from 1991 - 1998, but this rise was directly related to increases in sports and excersize participation. Boomers are essential for future medicine; many brought about the original fitness movement and have made exercise a lifelong commitment. From 1987 - 2001, health club membership among people aged 35-54 increased by 135%; after stripping out the effect of population growth, the incidence of membership could still claim a 60% rise.

Every year, about 1 million Australians are injured playing sports, with the rates of those requiring treatment highest in the 5 to 14 age bracket. Altogether, sports-related injuries cost an estimated $1.65 billion USD a year, and at least 50 percent of them are preventable, accordig Sports Medicine Australia program manager Annabel Sides. Research shows that 20 percent of adults don't participate in physical activity because of previous injuries they have incurred.
